Betty Boop Doodle Painting #1 30x30cm
Acrylic and posca paint marker on canvas. Painting produced for the 2016 group show of Over the Line studios.
Part 1 of a triptych based on the theme of nostalgia, childhood cartoons, energy, abstraction and simplification of colour and shape.
This series of paintings pays homage to the expressive power of the simple doodle. I worked as a digital designer and illustrator for many years and this influenced the way I think about colour, shape, line and tone and changed my drawing style in a fundamental way, often making it more bold and simplistic.
I love working with Adobe illustrator, it gave me the precision and control I always wanted with regular drawing, but then through that it taught me to value signs of the human hand, imperfections, wobbly lines etc! These paintings marry these ideas, The doodle-disorder type obsession of my teenage years, wanting more control in my drawing, getting too much control with digital! & then both celebrating and reconciling this roundabout relationship with doodles and digital in an analogue way.
This painting is sightly reduced to a varnishing blemish which you can see in the last photo listed.
